Change of Plans to Chania, Crete

As mentioned previously, we had begun to experience rough seas on our cruise around the Greek Isles, and on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, a change of plans took us to Chania, Crete instead of Mykonos. Because Mykonos required tendering to the island, we were rerouted to a nearby destination where our ship could pull in to the port. While a bit disappointing for Jim and Shauna, Bob and I were glad we had previously been to Mykonos, and were excited about the opportunity to visit Crete, the largest and most populous Greek Island. After coming ashore, we were loaded onto buses and taken to the Venetian Harbor, the entry to the Old port. It was a cute port little port lined with restaurants and shops. We had a great time wading through and watching the huge waves splash over the sea walls and into the city.

Ruins of the old city lined the seawall. They were fun to scramble around on and made for some great photo opportunities.

The lighthouse, at the entrance to the port of Chania, was built in 1862 upon the site of an original Venetian naval post designed to protect the city from Turks or pirates. We had a lot of fun capturing pictures of the waves around the lighthouse.

This city was such a cute and colorful place for capturing fun vignettes.

Not far from the port was the popular Chania Nea Chora beach, which we decided to walk to and relax until time to return to the ship. It was nice to just relax for a while on the seashore.

The gift shops in Crete featured replicas of the The Phaistos Disc, discovered in 1908, which is a disk of fired clay found in the basement cell of a temple depository on the south side of Crete, Greece, and is dated back to 1850 BC. It is covered with glyphs, or pictures and the text, language and purpose of the disk is unknown. This fascinating find inspired me to purchase a Phaistos Disc charm for my collection.
