Amazing Amsterdam

Having spend a gorgeous afternoon in Amsterdam the previous day, the Johnsons and I awoke the morning of April 26, 2018 with the intent of visiting the Van Gogh Museum and then cruising along some of the 165 picturesque canals the weave around the city.  The museum was a challenge for the kids - and truthfully, we adults as well!  The crowds were quite unbearable, but with museum "treasure hunt" maps in hand, we ventured forth.

The blue boat canal cruise also provided entertainment for the kids as we floated around the UNESCO World Heritage site. This is Amsterdam as I imagined it to be.

Here are a few more photos of sites around the city that we captured while in Amsterdam.

Before leaving the Netherlands, the following day we went to an 18th-19th century working traditional village called Zaanse Shans.  It features costumes, model windmills and interactive exhibits on chocolate making. Artisan workshops demonstrate rare handicrafts such as wooden clog carving, barrel making and pewter casting.  We watched the clog making demonstration, sampled lots of cheese, and enjoyed the newly hatched baby ducks.

Satisfied that we had experienced a pretty good sampling of Holland's allure, we found a McDonald's nearby, recharged ourselves with some lunch and then drove south to Bruges, Belgium.
